Stranger Things: The First Shadow is a stage play that serves as an official prequel to the Netflix series Stranger Things. Directed by Stephen Daldry, The First Shadow is written by series staff writer Kate Trefry, with the play's story conceived by Trefry, the Duffer Brothers and Jack Thorne. The play made its debut at London's Phoenix Theatre in late 2023, followed by an additional New York production in 2025.[1][2][3]

West End version
- The following describes the West End version of "The First Shadow":
Prologue
- On October 28, 1943, the United States Navy conducts a classified experiment aboard the USS Eldridge, attempting to use a force field to render the ship invisible to enemy forces. Instead, the vessel is transported to the Abyss, where the crew are attacked by hostile creatures.
Chapter One: The Girl from Nowhere
- On October 1, 1959, the Creel family, consisting of Victor, Virginia, Henry and Alice, move from Nevada to a new home in Hawkins, Indiana, on the first day of the school year at Hawkins High School. As the family settles in, Henry explores the attic, bringing with him a spider he keeps in a jar. While there, he unintentionally psychically connects to a radio belonging to Patty Newby, daughter of Principal Newby, as she prepares for school.
- Henry arrives at Hawkins High, where he is introduced to other students by Walter Henderson, who alludes to an incident from Henry's past in Nevada. Henry struggles socially but quickly forms a connection with Patty. That same day, the school holds picture day and auditions for the upcoming production of Dark of the Moon, directed by Joyce Maldonado, who encourages students to participate.
- That evening, Henry hides in the attic and overhears his parents arguing about him. He becomes overwhelmed by the influence of a shadowy presence, and his mind enters what he calls "the battlefield". Under its influence, Henry kills several animals in the area, including Claudia Yount's cat, Prancer.
- At church, Claudia announces Prancer's death and offers a $100 reward for information; James Hopper Jr. and Patty's brother Bob hear about the reward and begin investigating. Henry and Patty speak privately in the church confessional, discussing their mothers and their loneliness. Henry promises to turn his nightmares into something good for her and creates a vision in which Patty imagines her mother performing as a singer in Las Vegas.
- As the animal deaths continue, Jim and Bob discover Prancer's remains, and the investigation expands. These events coincide with the first rehearsal of Dark of the Moon, during which Jim questions several students, including Ted Wheeler, Alan Munson, and Henry. Jim dismisses Henry as a suspect but unsettles him by calling him "creepy," prompting Henry to flee to the school bathroom. There, Henry experiences another encounter with the shadowy presence, which takes the form of Patty, before the real Patty arrives to comfort him. The two share a kiss.
- Later, at Melvald's Diner, Jim theorizes that the killer may be reenacting Dark of the Moon. Henry demonstrates telepathy to Patty by describing the emotions of the other teenagers and agrees to help her search for her biological mother. Joyce and Jim argue over Jim's motives, while Bob connects the animal killings to unusual radio interference.
- At home, Virginia confronts Henry and slaps him after accusing him of inappropriate behavior with Patty. Meanwhile, Bob introduces his Directional Antenna Device (D.A.D.), and Joyce, Jim, and Bob trace the source of the strange radio signal to the Creel house.
- Henry attempts to use his powers to track down Patty's biological mother. As he does this, and while inside the void, he loses control and is once again visited by the monster. This frightens Patty, and when her father walks in and witnesses the scene, he is attacked and almost killed (by Henry controlled by the presence). Patty is able to encourage Henry to fight back by telling him that she believes he is good and that she loves him. Henry responds that he loves her too and is able to end the situation, but not before Patty's father is blinded and seriously injured. Mr. Newby is sent to the hospital, and Henry's mother Virginia sends Henry to Dr. Martin Brenner. It is revealed that she was supplied with drugs by Brenner; under the influence of these drugs, Virginia told Brenner everything about her son. When Mr. Newby wakes up, he tells Patty that Henry saved him from the monster. Mr. Newby draws a picture of the shadowy entity on a piece of paper and gives it to his daughter: it's the Mind Flayer.
Chapter Two: Captain Midnight
- Brenner takes Henry to Hawkins National Laboratory, where the two discuss the past:
- It is explained that Brenner's father was the captain and sole survivor of the USS Eldridge experiment, who returned to the normal world with significant injuries and a unique blood type. Upon learning of this, his son Martin devoted himself to learning the truth behind the incident and established the Nevada Experiment, an attempt to reproduce what had happened to the Eldridge.
- However, one of the personnel stationed at the Nevada military base was a spy for the Soviet Union. They managed to escape while stealing vital technology, transporting it to a Nevadan cave. At this time, an 8-year-old Henry and the Creels lived nearby, in Rachel, Nevada. While exploring the Nevadan caves and playing with a spyglass, Henry stumbled across the stolen technology when it unexpectedly activated, transporting him to the Abyss.
- In the Abyss, Henry was exposed to the influence of the shadowy entity. Though Henry returned home after 12 hours, he now possessed a unique blood type and had a changed personality. Brenner was later able to track Henry down thanks to Henry dropping his spyglass in the caves.
- Henry, using a sensory deprivation chamber, shows Brenner a humanoid creature through the Void. Brenner sees this creature displayed on a screen, and Henry convulses. Brenner then tries to force Henry to kill a prisoner, but Henry breaks down and ends up stabbing two guards. After this, Henry tells Brenner that he can let him go. Brenner understands that the boy is devoted to someone and therefore cannot kill; later Brenner realizes that this person is Patty and vows to find and kill her.
- Henry returns home, but senses that his family is not happy about his return. Using his powers, he reads his mother's thoughts and understands that she wants to send him back to Brenner. Henry gives into the shadowy entity's influence, which results in the deaths of Virginia and Alice.
- In the aftermath of Virginia and Alice's deaths, Victor is blamed for the killings. Some time later, Henry walks to Hawkins High School to save Patty from Brenner, where the performance of Dark of the Moon is in progress. Atop the stage rafters, Henry reunites with Patty only to be interrupted by Brenner, who appears on the other side of the stage. Brenner says that Patty is his weakness, and Patty tells Henry not to listen to him. As Henry struggles for control, he informs Patty that he managed to find her birth mother, a singer at the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas. Feeling overwhelmed, the shadowy entity once again takes control of Henry, and Henry throws Patty off the rafters. Brenner takes Henry back to Hawkins Lab, Patty is taken to the hospital, and Victor Creel is accused of the murder of Virginia and Alice based on Joyce, Bob and Jim's assumptions about the animal killings.
Epilogue
- Some years later, an older Henry is back at Hawkins Lab and is restrained. Using the Void, Henry discovers that Patty survived her fall and was discharged from the hospital, though now needing to walk with a cane. Henry observes her in Las Vegas, where she meets her mother backstage after a performance at the Stardust Casino; Patty and her mother recognize each other and embrace.
- Brenner informs Henry that the blood transfusions administered to the test subjects have been successful; as a reward, Brenner frees Henry from his restraints. In the Rainbow Room, Henry is introduced to one of the children; Henry remarks: "What's your name?" (He takes her arm) "Eleven, it's nice to meet you, I'm here to help." Lightning flashes and the silhouette of Vecna appears on the back wall.
Broadway version
- The following describes the Broadway version of "The First Shadow":
Henry is shown to carry a portable radio; using his powers, he manipulates the radio as a way to eavesdrop on his parents.
- Henry arrives at Hawkins High, where he is introduced to other students by Sue Sinclair. Henry struggles socially, getting hassled by Walter Henderson. However, he soon forms a connection with Patty Newby. During Henry and Patty's conversation, it is revealed that Henry is highly skilled with codes and ciphers, having won his radio as a child by cracking a Captain Midnight codegraph; he writes in his journal using a cipher to keep his writing hidden from his parents.
- As animal deaths begin occurring around Hawkins, radio interference increases throughout the town. Jim Hopper Jr. and Bob Newby take notice of the strange signals, while Joyce Maldonado encourages students to audition for the school’s production of Dark of the Moon. Henry experiences disturbing visions linked to a shadowy presence, which increasingly intrudes upon his thoughts and actions.
- Patty and Henry grow closer, with Henry using his abilities to create vivid mental visions for her. At home, Virginia Creel becomes fearful of her son and secretly communicates with Dr. Martin Brenner, believing Henry to be dangerous. These revelations deepen Henry’s sense of isolation and accelerate his psychological deterioration.
Chapter Two: Captain Midnight
- Henry is taken to Hawkins National Laboratory by Dr. Martin Brenner, who reveals his connection to the USS Eldridge experiment through his father, the ship’s sole survivor. Brenner explains that Henry’s exposure to Dimension X occurred years earlier in Nevada, when stolen experimental technology activated in nearby caves and transported Henry into the other dimension.
- During his time in Dimension X, Henry became psychically bonded to a powerful shadowy entity. Though he returned home after several hours, the experience permanently altered him, granting him abilities and a unique blood type. Brenner subjects Henry to experiments using sensory deprivation tanks, forcing him to confront creatures from the Void.
- Brenner attempts to coerce Henry into killing a restrained prisoner, but Henry refuses, breaking down emotionally. Brenner concludes that Henry’s emotional attachment to Patty is preventing him from fully surrendering to the entity’s influence and resolves to eliminate her.
- Henry returns home and reads his mother’s thoughts, discovering her intention to send him back to the lab permanently. Overwhelmed, Henry gives in to the shadow entity, resulting in the deaths of Virginia and Alice Creel. Victor Creel is blamed for the murders.
- That night, during a performance of Dark of the Moon at Hawkins High School, Henry confronts Brenner in the theater rafters. Patty tries to reach Henry emotionally, but Brenner manipulates him by framing Patty as his weakness. Losing control, Henry throws Patty from the rafters. Brenner recaptures Henry, while Patty survives but is critically injured.
Epilogue
- Some time later, Henry is shown restrained at Hawkins National Laboratory. Through the Void, he observes Patty recovering and eventually traveling to Las Vegas, where she reunites with her biological mother—a former high school student who had been impregnated by Principal Newby, a truth concealed for years.
- Brenner reveals that blood transfusions derived from Henry have proven successful on other test subjects. As a reward, Brenner releases Henry from his restraints and introduces him to a young girl in the Rainbow Room. Henry asks her name, and she responds, “Eleven.”
- As lightning flashes across the stage, Henry’s silhouette merges with the looming form of Vecna, signaling his transformation and the beginning of the events that will later unfold in Stranger Things.

Production history
West End, London (2023-2025)
Following the announcement of Season 4's release dates, the Duffer Brothers hinted the Stranger Things universe would expand.[8]
At some point, British theatre producer Stephen Daldry brought an idea for a Stranger Things-themed stage play to the Duffer Brothers. Daldy was uninterested in doing "a musical of season one or something like that", as Matt Duffer initially assumed, but instead "wanted to tell a new and original story".[9]
On July 6, 2022, the Duffers and Netflix put out a press release, announcing the Duffers' new production company and various projects in development, including the new Stranger Things-themed stage play. 21 Laps Entertainment were noted to serve as Associate Producer. Stephen Daldry and Sonia Friedman would produce, working alongside Netflix, with Daldry also directing.[10]
A report posted by Collider on January 11, 2023, claimed the play was looking to cast 14-year-olds 'George Smith' and 'Betty Olsen'. George was described as a "moody and pale" outcast, while Betty was the daughter of a preacher and a "goody two-shoes" who can't believe she's falling for the school outcast. The breakdown for Betty specifically called for BIPOC actors with the ability to sing.[11]
On March 1, 2023, the play was announced to be titled The First Shadow, and had a synopsis reveal. Series writer Kate Trefry and playwright Jack Thorne's involvement was also revealed. Furthermore, it was confirmed the play would make its debut at London's West End on December 14, 2023, superseding A Streetcar Named Desire at the Phoenix Theatre.[1][2][9]
On September 20, 2023, the full cast was announced. The initial production would feature Oscar Lloyd as James Hopper Jr., Isabella Pappas as Joyce Maldonado, Christopher Buckley as Bob Newby, Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, Patrick Vaill as Dr. Brenner, Ella Karuna Williams as Patty Newby, Michael Jibson as Victor Creel, and Lauren Ward as Virginia Creel.[12]
The show began previews on November 17, 2023 and officially opened on December 14, 2023.
On December 14, Deadline reported that there are plans to make The First Shadow the first in a trilogy of Stranger Things-related stage plays. The First Shadow would eventually transfer to Broadway, with each new play following in the same pattern as Shadow, first debuting in London's West End.[3]
Broadway, New York (2025)
On August 6, 2024 it was announced that the show would transfer to Broadway in Spring 2025. Previews are expected to begin at the Marquis Theatre on March 28, 2025, while the play's official opening date is scheduled for April 22, 2025.[13] Louis McCartney was announced to reprise his role as Henry Creel from London.[14] During the December run, Jamie Campbell Bower appeared in a cameo at the end of the show to reprise the role of adult Henry Creel.
Differences between versions
West End, London (2023-2025)
The original cast announcement listed Patty and Bob's father as "Father Newby", indicating he would be a priest. Related to this, the promotional materials for the play also included images of a church, and the casting call for Patty mentions she is "the daughter of a preacher". However, the character was later changed to be the principal of Hawkins High.
Similarly, the listing of Eddie Munson's father on the First Shadow website was changed from "Allen" to "Alan", and the listing for the Claudia Henderson character was changed to "Claudia Yount", revealing her maiden name.
The show began previews on November 17, 2023. In the initial preview, the play ended with Brenner introducing Henry to women pregnant with the other child test subjects (Two, Three, et al), with Henry meeting Eleven as a newborn baby.
In all subsequent performances, Henry instead meets Eleven as an older infant (though Eleven is still younger than she appears in the Season 4 flashbacks). Henry meeting Eleven as a newborn baby in the initial preview was the result of time constraints. The initial performance took longer than expected; in the UK, child actors cannot legally perform after 11pm, which necessitated the use of the altered ending.[15][16]
West End vs Broadway
The Broadway version of the play includes numerous differences from the West End version:
Major differences
- In the West End version, Patty is said to be the adoptive daughter of Principal Newby, and was stolen by Principal Newby as a baby. Principal Newby forcibly took custody of Patty, claiming that her biological mother was unfit to take care of her. However, in the Broadway version, Patty's backstory was altered, with Patty learning her mother was actually a high school student impregnated by Principal Newby, with Newby 'adopting' their child.
Minor differences
- to be added
Documentary
On April 15, 2025, the documentary Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things The First Shadow released on Netflix.
Trivia
- The play primarily takes place between October and December 1959. This notably conflicts with dates included in a prop article shown in "The Monster and the Superhero", which states that the Creel murders occurred on March 14, 1959.
- While this is the first official Stranger Things play, it was preceded by unofficial productions (most notably Stranger Sings! The Musical Parody).
- Just before the curtain call, the stage looks like Netflix asking the viewer to watch another episode.
