MODERATORS

There are two types of moderators at Stranger Things Wiki:

Discussion moderators:

Discussion moderators (otherwise known as "d-mods") are trusted members of the Stranger Things Wiki who are responsible for moderating the discussion side of the community: the D-board. D-mods serve as a direct point of contact for users who are seeking advice, information, or assistance, but like administrators, their authority goes only as far as the tools they are given; they are equal to everyone else in terms of abiding by the guidelines and respecting the community as a whole. D-mods have "sysop rights," a set of tools that allows them to perform operations that ordinary users cannot, including editing, locking, and deleting posts and comments.

Content moderators:

Content moderators (also known as "c-mods") are trusted members of the Stranger Things Wiki who have similar powers to administrators. They have a set of tools that allows them to perform operations that ordinary users cannot, including the deletion of pages and blocking troublemakers.

In 2022, the Stranger Things Wiki implemented a system which allows users to officially apply to become a moderator.

Discussion moderators

The role of discussion moderator

Discussion Moderators are a local user group with a more restricted tool set than administators, intended to provide d-mods the ability to moderate the d-board efficiently. These tools include:

• Editing their posts as well as others after the normal 24 hour restriction.
• Locking posts that break the guidelines.
• Deleting posts that break the guidlines (and are inappropriate to leave visible to others).
• Changing which category a post is labeled under.
• Accessing the reported posts and posts caught by the Discussions Abuse Filter.

Discussion Moderator conduct

Discussion Moderators have been entrusted with the means to maintain the quality of the discussion board and keep the peace within the community. With this in mind, a d-mod is expected to:

• be friendly, welcoming, and helpful to others
• be open and welcoming in their communication and respond to messages on their wall in a reasonably timely manner
• address disruptions on the d-board, including breaches of civility
• defuse building arguments between users and general tension
• work closely with the wiki administrators to enforce the guidelines and implement wiki disicions on the d-board.

In addition to following the User Guidelines for the wiki, a d-mod must not:

• act like they own the site. The Discussion Board belongs to the community, and d-mods are the protectors of the community.
• abuse their d-mod privileges to censor or otherwise unfairly inhibit reasonable discussion.
• misapply or selectively apply the code of conduct in their moderating role.

While d-mods are not above regular users in terms of importance, they should be aware that their status makes role models out of them, and they should carry themselves accordingly.

Content moderators

The role of content moderator

Content Moderators are users who have additional tools available to moderate the wiki's content. These tools are:

• Deleting and restoring pages and files
• Protecting and unprotecting pages
• Mark other people's edits as patrolled.
• Have their own edits marked as patrolled automatically.
• View private abuse filters and abuse log details.
• Have access to quicker reverting tools.

Becoming a moderator

• Anyone may nominate themselves, or be nominated by others. Any nomination must be accompanied by a statement no longer than 100 words, and should be a logical and reasonable explanation detailing why the user would make a good mod.
• Users must have been active for at least four weeks to be able to vote or nominate (or be nominated by another user).
• Nominees must have proficient writing ability (in English).
• It should be specified whether the user is a nominee for D-mod or content mod.
• Nominees should have some degree of knowledge of moderator tools, and an idea of how they would use these tools if they received the d-mod position.
• If a user who has repeatedly and demonstrably violated the User Guidelines decides to apply, their application may initially be permitted, but an administrator has the right to remove it, if they wish.
  • It is the responsibility of the nominator to ensure compliance; non-complying nominations will likely be rejected by an administrator or bureaucrat.

If a nominee's application complies with the above requirements, an administrator will invite them to an interview conducted on Discord.
