The "Hedgehog" was a type of sonic weapon that affected users of psychic abilities; it was seemingly invented by Dr. Kay.[1][2] When pointed at its target, the device would overwhelm the target's mind, neutralising their powers in the process.
In 1987, Kay and her Wolf Pack paramilitaries used the sonic weapons during their hunt for Eleven, who Kay held responsible for the strange goings-on in Hawkins, Indiana. The devices were also used to contain Kali Prasad in her cell at Gable Ridge Road Base, in the Upside Down.[2]

Trivia
- The sonic weapons might be related to Dr. Brenner's Soteria, the power suppressant chip that Brenner inserted into the neck of Henry Creel.
- The nickname "Hedgehog" appears to be a joke referencing Sonic the Hedgehog, since the weaponry is sonic. This is likely not intended as an in-universe reference, as the first Sonic the Hedgehog game didn't release until 1991.
- From an in-universe standpoint, the "hedgehog" name could refer to the prickled, defensive state of a hedgehog and its regular, non-prickled state, which is soft to the touch. This mirrors the varying effects of sonic weapons, which either inflict harm or remain functionally harmless when pointed at different targets.
